This exhibition allows us to admire the works from the golden age of Florentine art, starting from the 15th century until 1546 when Cosimo de’ Medici was already the duke of Tuscany. More than a hundred intense years during which the city lived through a revolution where the man started to be the center of its own universe, exalted as free and selfmade.

At the beginning of the 15th century the first prodigies started to flourish, among them Masaccio, Filippo Lippi and Beato Angelico. During the following years, Florence welcomed a series of geniuses and, in that context, art was completely reinvented.

Florentine Renaissance art reached its most celebrated phase with Lorenzo the Magnificent, Botticelli and their world of refined artworks destined for the élite.

The beginning of the new century was, once again, a high point in Florentine history when the great artists, Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo were all in the city. Leonardo was already an elderly man, Michelangelo at the peak of his career and young Raphael heard about the two masters and decided to come to learn from them (his “golden era” started from this point). After Leonardo left Florence as well as Raphael, Michelangelo influenced the artistic scene of the city, even when he left Florence to stay permanently in Rome in 1534.
